Lies of the National Rifle Selling Association

The attempt of NRA Executive VP Wayne Lapierre to claim the U.S.should follow Israel as a way of stopping school massacres ran into a roadblock when his claims were denied by top Israelis.   Lapierre said on December 23 at a news conference that “Israel had a whole lot of school shootings, until they did one thing. They said we’re going to stop it and they put armed security in every school and they have not had a problem since then.”

New York’s Daily News reports that Yigal Palmor, spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry answered Lapierre by stating, “We didn’t have a series of school shootings, and they had nothing to do with the issue at hand in the United States. We had to deal with terrorism.”

According to Reuven Berko, a retired Israeli Army colonel and senior police officer “Israeli citizens are not allowed to carry guns unless they are serving in the army or working in security-related jobs that require them to use a weapon.”

Berko denied there was any useful comparisons with gun attacks by ” maniacs with psychological problems opening fire at random” and “terrorists”.

Yakov Amit, head of the firearms licensing department at the Ministry of Public Security, says Israelis do not have the “right” to carry weapons.  They need a special license and have to prove they live in a dangerous area.  There’s about 1 privately owned gun for every 30 adults in Israel.  In the U.S. there are estimated some 270 million privately owned guns, virtually one for every man, woman or child.

It’s not even true that there have been numerous attacks on Israeli schools.  There were two attacks involving Israeli schools that resulted in deaths.  The worst was at Ma’alot near theLebanonborder back in 1974 where 25 were killed.  In 2008 a lone Palestinian killed 8 teenagers at a nighttime study session at a Jewish religious seminary inJerusalem.  Attacks by crazed Israeli Jews on Israeli schools are unheard of.

BTW it’s much more likely for Palestinian schools to be attacked by Israeli soldiers or settlers than the other way around.  In 2009 Israelis shelled a school at a refugee camp in Gaza and killed 42 children including 14 children.
